How to Catch Smoothhounds from the Shores of the Bristol Channel

A Complete Guide for Sea Anglers

What Are Smoothhounds and Where to Find Them?

Smoothhounds are a type of small shark, known for their long, streamlined bodies and impressive speed. These fish can grow up to 1.5 meters long and are known for putting up a great fight, especially when hooked from the shore in shallow water. They are most commonly found over rough ground or mixed seabeds, making the Bristol Channel an ideal habitat.

Smoothhounds are typically found in the shallower waters close to shore, particularly in areas where there is a strong tidal pull. They feed on crabs, marine worms, and other invertebrates, which are abundant in the Bristol Channel. The warm summer months, particularly between May and September, are the prime time to catch smoothhounds as they move closer to shore to feed.

Best Locations to Catch Smoothhounds in the Bristol Channel

The Bristol Channel offers numerous spots for anglers looking to catch smoothhounds. Here are a few popular locations where you’ll find the best chances of success:

  1. Brean Down: This huge limestone promontory is subject to tremendous tide and at certain locations towards the end of Brean Down, the rougher ground offers the prospect of great fishing.
  2. Sandpoint: This location has access to deep water at relatively close range and you will be casting on to food rich sand coral. Smoothhounds arrive here around June to feed primarily on crabs.
  3. Clevedon: Clevedon’s rocky shoreline and access to deeper waters make it another excellent spot for smoothhound fishing. Ladye Bay can produce some huge fish during the summer months.

The Right Tackle for Smoothhound Fishing

Smoothhounds can grow to impressive sizes and put up a good fight, so it’s important to use the right tackle to handle them effectively. Here’s a rundown of the gear you’ll need:

Rod and Reel

A 13 to 14-foot beachcasting rod is ideal for targeting smoothhounds. It should be able to comfortably cast 6-7oz leads to combat the tidal run you will often be fishing in to. Your fixed spool or multiplier reel should be loaded with an 18-20lb mainline and a shock leader. Occasionally, it might be necessary to give line to a running fish, so ensure that your reel’s clutch is smooth and set correctly.

Rig Setup

For smoothhounds, a simple pulley rig is the only way to go. As you’ll likely be fishing over rough ground, a weak link system should be utilised to avoid excessive tackle loss. A dongle rig carrying a 4/0 Varivas Full Circle hook is perfect for presenting crab baits. Use a rig constructed of 80-100lb monofilament to combat the harsh terrain that you might be fishing over.

Bait

Smoothhounds are particularly attracted to fresh crabs, but frozen crabs and prawns are also noted baits. Crabs work exceptionally well and a freshly peeled crab will release lots of fish-attracting juices in the tide. Smoothhounds will also take squid baits at times.

Tips for Catching Smoothhounds

  • Timing Matters: Smoothhounds are most active during the warmer months of late spring through summer. Look for prime fishing windows around neap tides when the tidal pull is less and venues become easier to fish. Warm southerly winds are often the most productive.
  • Tide is Key: When fishing from the shore during bigger tides, always aim for high tide or just after. Smoothhounds tend to come in closer to shore during these times to feed on crabs, shrimps and other marine worms, even on those marks that might dry out at low tide. Low tides offer better fishing over low water.
  • Stay Patient and Ready: Smoothhounds can be elusive, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a bite straight away. They do feed in packs though, so when you do locate them be prepared for multiple bites. Keep close to your rods or set the ratchet/clutch on your reel- smooth hound takes can be fast and savage!
